ECO TOURISM IN SRIKAKULAM DISTRICT
Over the years, the definition of ECO Tourism has changed and evolved as travellers
have become more aware of the impact of their travels on both the environment
and communities, yet it remains difficult to define because of the various
facets involved.
On a consensus, ECO Tourism may be defined as, “Environmentally responsible
travel to natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate nature (and
accompanying cultural features, both past and present) that promote
conservation, have a low visitor impact and provide for beneficially active
socio-economic involvement of local peoples.”
“ECO Tourism is about connecting conservation, communities and sustainable
travel”. This means that those who implement and participate in Responsible Tourism
activities should follow the ECO Tourism principles such as
- Conscientious,
low-impact visitor behaviour
- Sensitivity towards, and appreciation of local cultures and biodiversity
- Support for local conservation efforts
- Sustainable benefits to local communities
- Local participation in decision-making
- Provide positive experiences for both visitors and
hosts
- Educational components for both the traveler and local
communities
- Raise sensitivity to host countries’ political,
environmental and social climate
So, it seems that definition of ECO Tourism today is a conglomerate of the various travel ideologies it attempts to achieve. It is Sustainable Tourism, Responsible Tourism, Ethical Tourism, Cultural Tourism, Green Tourism – all equally confusing labels that are seldom correctly defined but at the same time encompass the values of ECO Tourism.
